 They say that long ago, a hawk lived on a forested hill. He built a nest in the crown of a tall tree, and soon his mate laid four eggs. Then a fierce earthquake struck, shaking the nest and sending the eggs tumbling down the slope. One egg rolled into a chicken farm at the base of the hill. The hens knew an egg needed care, so they gave it to an old broody hen. In time, the shell cracked, and out came a beautiful hawk. But raised among chickens, the little hawk grew up believing he was one of them. One day, while playing in the yard, he looked up and saw a band of hawks circling high above the farm. His heart leapt—he longed to soar like them. The chickens laughed: “You’re just a chicken. You’ll never fly like that. Learn your place!” Little by little, the hawk abandoned his dreams.
