Storytelling Is Their Gift

Image
Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD for its acronym, is a label of lack and dysfunction by society. ADDers have their strengths and weaknesses in character, personality, and traits, just like everyone else. One such gift, usually not recognized or valued as one, is the gift of storytelling. Storytelling, not in the sense of spinning a yarn, even though they can do that just as well. Storytelling is the sense of naturally attaching energy to words that grab hold of their listeners and stop time. People cherish listening to them and hold onto every single syllable. It doesn't matter the topic as long as it's something the ADDer understands and believes. There isn't a survey available that I can quote on this enlightenment. What I do have is 55 years of living with this gift and no conscious awareness of its value until just a few years ago. Alone, I struggled with all its deep crevices, developing new solutions, to find the path on how it intertwines with my life purpose. Thi...

Breathing Room

Image
Some of us live as if the hounds of hell themselves were nipping at our heels - and many will attest that that's precisely what it feels like at times. De-stressing, relaxing, refocusing, and other methods of relieving the pressure are vital for our survival unless we aspire to end up in a hospital bed recovering from a heart attack or a stroke before we reach retirement age. Check out these ideas and see if they don't offer some relief from the hectic pace of everyday life: 1. Create a library of soothing and therapeutic music and purchase as quality a set of headphones as you can manage (scrimp a little elsewhere and buy the best - it's worth it). Take some time each day to disappear into the music and block out all the worries and tensions of the day. Although it may be hard at first, keep at it. Eventually, your body will train itself to this new "coffee break" and start to get fidgety if you run late. 2. Learn to create a reserve of time, money, availability...

Treat Yourself

Image
We take care of family, friends, work, spouses, and pets. But far too few of us take the time and consideration to take care of the one who keeps it all going - ourselves. Treating yourself well is not a luxury. It's a necessary step in maintaining the stability of mind and mood that makes taking care of all your loved ones possible. Here are some ways you can help yourself help others: 1. If your clothes don't fit, your couch sags, and your hairstyle are shaggy and dated, then no matter how competent, how ready, and how willing you are to throw your heart and soul into something, you're likely to fizzle out before you even get going. Now, this is not to say that the possessions make the person - not by a long stretch. But self-respect requires self-care. Don't fall into the "golden toilet" greed-and-speed lifestyle, but do take care to see that your clothes fit you, inside and out, that your health and wealth are in good hands, and that the trappings of your...

The Courage To Change

Image
Autumn - crisp, cool nights and warming days; vibrant reds, yellows, orange, and rust; a hot cup of tea and a cozy fire; a good book and the call of Canadian geese. These are autumn changes, and they fill me with peace and joy. As Henry David Thoreau said, "Only that day dawns to which we are awake." Wake up and look around you. We are in the midst of change. As I venture forth in Vermont during this time of year, I am amazed at the power of nature. It can heal, rest and rejuvenate, burst forth with new growth, and change colors. It is the circle of life. I ponder my process of life. What changes have I made, and do I have to courage to change some more? Life is a journey to be enjoyed, and I will embark on a trip right now. Do you have the courage to come along? I hope so, and I hope this journey will be a catalyst of change for you and me. The journey of change...   Let's park the car and get out and walk. The sun is bright and warming the day nicely. The air is fresh....

The Secrets to Overcome Procrastination

Image
Webster defines procrastination as a means to defer or delay action until an opportunity is lost. If you could change only one habit, eliminating procrastination would be the one that will put you on the roadway to success. The tendency to procrastinate devours time. Opportunities come knocking at the door in many ways - some as gentle as a wave upon the sand and others as turbulent as a tidal wave. These moments hit when you least expect or want them. Learn to embrace change and take advantage of opportunities. If you turn your back, you just might be missing something special. Quite often, you discover beautiful lessons in the messiest of challenges. Someone once wrote, "Procrastination is the only thing I have time for!" But is this statement true for you, too? Do you possess a bag full of excuses or promise yourself that you will start first thing tomorrow morning? Here are some reasons people justify procrastination and how you might overcome this handicap while getting...

Svadisthana - I feel!

Image
The Svadisthana, also known as the sacral chakra, is the second chakra in the seven-member chakra system. It is located just above Muladhara, about 4 cm below the navel. The word Swadisthana (Sanskrit: स्वाधिष्ठान) is Sanskrit and translates as residence, seat or apartment, but the word 'swad' also translates as enjoyment and pleasure. Svadisthana is the center of creative potential, sexuality, and pleasure. This corresponds to the affirmation I feel. It is associated with emotions and desires, and its primary urge is the pursuit of pleasure. It determines the way we experience our own bodies. In addition to being responsible for creativity, that is, for what the individual offers to the world through art, Swadisthana also connects us with our deep intimacy and knowledge of the inner self. Svadisthana is ruled by the subconscious mind, associated with sensuality, self-acceptance, and intimacy. The inner world is divided into light and dark sides. Only when we take into accoun...

Short instructive zen stories

Image
Painting of nature The seventh elder of the Jufukuji Monastery, Master Ekichu, was a famous painter. One day the warrior Nobumitsu came to him and asked him from the door if he could paint the scent of the favorite verse "After walking through the flowers, the horse's hoof smells." Master Ekichu drew a horse's hoof and a butterfly hovering around him attracted by the scent. Nobumitsu then recited the verse "Spring wind on the riverbank" and asked him to paint the wind. The teacher drew a sloping willow branch. Nobumitsu quoted the famous zenist saying, "The finger pointed at the human heart." He asked her to paint a picture of his heart. The teacher took the paintbrush and threw a drop of ink on Nobumitsu's face. The warrior was surprised and angry, and the teacher immediately painted the angry face. Nobumitsu then asked for a picture of nature, saying, "see nature." The teacher took the brush in his hand and said: "This is a pi...

Muladhara chakra - the cradle of our spiritual potential

Image
The Muladhara Chakra is the first and primary chakra in the seven-member chakra system. The word Muladhara (Sanskrit: मूलाधार) is Sanskrit and means root or support (Mula - root and adhara - base, foundation). Hence this chakra is also known as the root chakra. The root chakra is associated with existential instincts such as the primary instinct for survival, the instinctive need for food, sex, home security, and family affiliation. It is connected with the unconscious part of the mind, where the experiences of past lives are stored. Genetic inheritance is also located here. It is believed that in this chakra is sublimated the total energy potential of man - sexual, emotional, mental, and spiritual. It is located at the bottom of the pelvis, between the anus and the perineum in men, i.e., in the cervix area in women. From here, start the three primary nodes, Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna, which connect Muladhara with the other six chakras, located along the spine, to the top of the ...

The truth about karma

Image
Almost everyone has heard of karma. Some people think that karma is almost destiny. But have you ever wondered what karma really means? The truth is that most of us have a misconception about what karma really is. When you really understand what karma means, then it can be used as a tool for personal development, a philosophy that will give you more freedom and control over your life. Karma has nothing to do with "fate." If you do something terrible, it does not mean that something terrible must happen to you to "balance" things in the universe. Karma is, in fact, the basis of all your actions and thoughts in every moment. The word karma means "action," not "fate." In Buddhism, karma is energy created by intentional action through thoughts, comments, and deeds. We all create karma every minute, and the karma we create affects us every minute. It is common to think of "my karma" as something you did in a previous life that sealed the fa...

How important is truth?

Image
We can live in denial, but that does not change anything in reality. The truth is what it is. No matter how wide the zone of discomfort, its consequences will spread. Although we are all aware of the reality of situations, we still choose to exist in a slightly shifted dimension where, as a reward - we allow ourselves to be offended by the mere mention of that reality and thus, probably - a little comforted. When and how did we get to this stage? Were there factors of global influence, or did each lead an individual progression with its own characteristics? Is this an evolutionary process or a passing trend? Has it always existed, and is it gaining importance now because of the mass of new information we face, or is it a product of modern times? Why has our own inability to deal with ourselves grown into a justification against reality? Likely, the answer lies somewhere in the middle of these questions - in the imbalance of things. In everyday life, where the willingness to be off...
